French organist Laurent Jochum will be presenting an organ recital at Northfield Community Church on Tuesday, April 28, at 2:00 p.m. Laurent is the organist at the Saint Jean Baptiste Church in Paris. A frequent recitalist and touring performer, he has won many competitions and awards, including the International Organ Competition and the Angers Inter-Conservatory Grand Organ Award. Do you have a performance talent? Singing, dancing, telling jokes, magic, balance a spoon on your nose?

Come and share it (3 minute time limit, you bring props).

God gave everyone talents, though not everyone has a performance talent.

So, do you paint, knit, cross stitch, write poems, etc.? Tables will be set up to display your talent.

Is your talent cooking, baking, organizing, decorating, welcoming others?

Please use your talents to help plan, organize, and run this event.

Receptions after both services in the fellowship hall, hosted by the Memorials Committee.

During each service the children will begin in worship, then are invited to join in an Easter Adventure in the Sunday school rooms or outside, depending on weather.

EASTER OFFERING

The war in Ukraine has entered its fifth year following the full-scale invasion that began on February 24, 2022. Our Easter Offering this year will again go to Scholar Leaders to support their efforts to help the people in Ukraine. Christopher Hays, the CEO of Scholar Leaders will join us Sunday May 10th as a guest preacher and will provide, among other things, an update on their efforts there. Here are a few stats to put the human and economic toll in perspective:

· Casualties: Estimates for combined military and civilian deaths and injuries have surpassed 1.5 million ; recent reports indicate over 15,000 civilians have been killed and 41,000 injured.

· Displacement: Over 10 million people remain displaced, including nearly 7 million internally and 3.7 million as refugees abroad.

· Infrastructure: 14% of all housing in the country has been damaged or destroyed.

· Reconstruction: The World Bank currently estimates the total cost for Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction at approximately $588 billion over the next decade.

Lent is a time to walk boldly with Jesus and to focus our eyes on God’s love and presence so we can take hope into our future, our Easter joy. Maybe this year is the time to take up a Lenten practice for you and/or your family to strengthen your faith walk. Give up something for Lent… maybe eating out or buying that expensive coffee and use the money saved to buy food for the food pantry. There is also the practice of taking up something to strengthen love for God and others for Lent… set aside time to pray each day, start a time of family devotions after a meal, do something kind for someone anonymously each day of Lent. Think about what might be a new Lenten practice for you.

NCC is partnering with Breakthrough Ministries for their Christmas Store project again this year. The store gives Garfield Park families the opportunity to shop for gifts for their loved ones. Our donations of brand-new gifts will be made available for purchase at a fraction of their retail cost at the temporary store Breakthrough sets up in their facility’s gymnasium

The North Suburban Chicago CROP Walk is a gathering of family, neighbors, and friends taking steps together to raise funds to provide life-saving support including emergency food and resources, along with the seeds, tools and programs that will help families feed themselves in the future. No one in this world should be hungry! Your participation is important! We need walkers! Walk as a family, gather a team, invite friends to join us.

It’s time for NCC walkers to sign up, start fund raising, and invite friends and family to join Team NCC. The need this year is critical. 25% of funds raised remain in our community. Our local recipients are A Just Harvest, Northfield Township Food Depository, and New Trier Township Food Pantry. With federal cuts to the SNAP program, more and more children, families, and seniors are turning to these local resources for their daily food. 75% of the money raised goes to Church World Service, the International Relief Agency that is the parent organization for all CROP Walks. Due to cuts to USAID, CWS and its partners are the only remaining organizations doing life-saving development work providing food, shelter, transportation, disaster relief, and medical care for our neighbors worldwide living on the edge of survival.

We’ll kick off this new year of Messy Church by explore loving God and loving others using the children’s book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud. The afternoon will be filled with lots of fun, crafts, games, snacks, friends, craziness, and a delicious dinner. Everyone is invited- all ages! Invite friends and neighbors to come! Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Mission for this Messy Church will be collecting boxes of cereal for Cereal Box Dominos and then they will be taken to the Northfield Township Food Pantry to fill people’s buckets and their stomachs.

This is a chance for all ages to come together to use hearts and hands to help others. Join in the making of fleece no-sew blankets that will provide a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. No skills necessary.

Annual Spring Meeting Thursday, May 1st

Dinner in the fellowship hall is at 6:00pm.

The meeting portion of the evening will begin at 7pm.

Dinner includes a delish Baked Potato Bar with all the fixings, plus fun and delectable desserts.

After dinner we will take up the following items:

Amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws
Request to spend up to $120K for parking lot replacement and sidewalk addition
Election and installation of officers

We’ll also hear a few words from the pastors and moderators.

Those who are up for election or re-election are encouraged to attend the meeting. All members of the congregation will find this meeting to be an informative and fellowship building experience. Spring Cleanup 2025

NCC Spring Cleanup on Saturday, May 3rd from 8am - 10am

Which expression do you like best: “Many hands make for light work,” or “Cleanliness is next to Godliness?” You have a chance to decide for yourself at the annual spring clean-up on Saturday, April 6th. Clean up day is a little early this year as we have company coming in mid-April.

Can you spare an hour or so on Saturday, May 3rd or, perhaps, at another day and time you might be available? We have a long, but very manageable, to-do list for those of all physical abilities (and preferences). If you enjoy being outside, weather permitting, we have outdoor tasks as well as indoor ones.

If you like washing windows (and, really, who does?), or at least are willing to spend an hour doing this chore, or tidying up the kitchen and pantry, doing reconnaissance looking for cobwebs, wiping down tables and chairs, cleaning up around the building and grounds, …..and more, then you are in just the right church!

If you would like to make a donation to offset the cost of hiring professionals to do the work, that’s also an option. You many donate online through NCC’s website and indicate in “Clean-up Day” in the “Other” section of “Donate Online.” Recent studies have shown the equivalent value for volunteer labor is just over $35 an hour.

Please let Pastor Meyer, Mike Chance or a member of the Board of Trustees know you would like to help, or just show up on May 3rd (8am-10) . Please consider bringing your own outdoor tools or, if you’re washing windows, window cleaning equipment and any other cleaning materials you prefer to use.

Join us for an important conversation about how faith organizations can leverage their buildings, grounds, people, and community networks to protect our land an people form the impacts of climate change.

Meet Josh Richardson of Brugmansia Ministries, Meghan Reha , a Renewable Energy Consultant, and Megan Miller of the Episcopal Church of St. James the Less.

No community is immune from the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation. As our world continues to experience extreme weather events with greater frequency, suffer from pollution, and lose wildlife diversity, how can we better prepare our Northfield community? Faith communities will likely be first responders in ensuring we can meet the basic human needs (food, water, shelter, clothing) in the face of both human and environmental stressors.

Join us for an important conversation about how faith organizations can leverage their buildings, grounds, people, and community networks to protect our land and people from crisis. We will be joined by speakers from Brugmansia Ministries, Faith in Place, and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary’s Center for Ecological Generation. We will discuss how we can take concrete steps to address existing local challenges with earth-based religious practices and community collaboration while becoming more prepared to address future environmental challenges. After hearing from our speakers, we will brainstorm ways that we can repair and protect God’s creation through the individual and cooperative efforts of Northfield’s communities of faith.

This event will be held from 11am to 12:30pm on Saturday, April 26. It is sponsored by Northfield Community Church, Divine Mercy Parish, St. James the Less Congregation, and Go Green Northfield. There will be a 45-minute panel followed by a 45-minute discussion for the public. Then, we will have a working lunch for congregational leaders to brainstorm on next steps.

Receptions after both services in the fellowship hall, hosted by the Memorials Committee.

During each service the children will begin in worship, then are invited to join in an Easter Adventure in the Sunday school rooms or outside, depending on weather.

This year, Northfield Community Church is committing its Easter Offering to Scholar Leaders, one of our mission partners. Scholar Leaders works directly with Christian leaders in Ukraine who build up the church in the midst of war. Since the beginning of Russia’s war of aggression in 2022, leaders like Dr. Valentin Siniy, president of Tavriski Christian Institute, have helped thousands of refugees find safety, and continued their primary mission of training Christian pastors. TCI trains pastors who bridge both spiritual and social needs, fosters an inclusive environment for learning, and works for collaboration across all of Ukraine’s Christian community.

NCC’s Easter gift will specifically go to support this area of Scholar Leaders’ work with TCI and other educational institutions in Ukraine as they face the continued challenge of training pastors in a time of war and political conflict.

In an age when the Christian academy can boast more scholars and resources than ever in history, the work produced by theologians focuses on increasingly trivial topics. That notwithstanding, the needs of the world and the scope of the Christian church are greater than history has ever witnessed. These Lenten Lectures, therefore, ask how to do theology that matters, for the Church and the world.

Proceeding from the premise that the task of theology is to know ever more of the infinite God, and to help the Church serve Jesus more faithfully in a changing world, these Lenten lectures explore how we can discover more about the Lord by listening to the witness of the sciences, and the experience of the marginalized voices of God's people.

Christopher M. Hays has served as President of Scholar Leaders since 2022 after working as a missionary and professor of New Testament at the Biblical Seminary of Colombia in Medellín. A biblical scholar committed to the transformation of theological knowledge into missional practice, he has worked in projects ranging from authoring scholarly volumes to establishing church-based ministries to victims of forced migration. He holds degrees from Wheaton and Oxford. His most recent book in English is Eight Million Exiles . He and his wife Michelle have three children and live in North Carolina.

The Oscar-nominated movie, Wicked, opens with a crowd celebrating the death of a wicked witch. The people of Oz are certain their celebration is a good thing because “no one mourns the wicked”. On this side of the rainbow deaths are celebrated, too, the ones we believe were necessary to restore peace and security. As we journey through Lent, join Suzanne Ross to discover how the Ozian celebration can illuminate the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ death and resurrection. We’ll allow the cross to cast its shadow over our celebrations and our certainty that we know where the line between good and evil falls.

Potluck Study: Panama Canal

NCC’s David DeHorn will present “The Panama Canal: A Journey through the history of building the canal, facts about the canal, and my personal account of this 51-mile marvel.” Bring a dish to share for lunch.

The Panama Canal (Spanish: Canal de Panamá) is an artificial 82-kilometer (51-mile) waterway in Panama that connects the Caribbean Sea with the Pacific Ocean. It cuts across the narrowest point of the Isthmus of Panama, and is a conduit for maritime trade between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Locks at each end lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial fresh water lake 26 meters (85 ft) above sea level, created by damming the Chagres River and Lake Alajuela to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal. Locks then lower the ships at the other end. An average of 200 ML (52,000,000 US gal) of fresh water is used in a single passing of a ship. The canal is threatened by low water levels during droughts.

The Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduces the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage, the Strait of Magellan or the Beagle Channel. Its construction was one of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken. Since its inauguration on August 15, 1914, the canal has succeeded in shortening maritime communication in time and distance, invigorating maritime and economic transportation by providing a short and relatively inexpensive transit route between the two oceans, decisively influencing global trade patterns, boosting economic growth in developed and developing countries, as well as providing the basic impetus for economic expansion in many remote regions of the world.

Sharing Christmas with Garfield Park neighbors

CHRISTMAS STORE TOY AND GIFT COLLECTION

Help Northfield Community Church bring the spirit of Christmas to the community of East Garfield Park. Breakthrough Ministries is providing the community with the Breakthrough Christmas Store - 5,000 gifts for 500 Garfield area residents. The gifts will provide parents, grandparents and caregivers, as well as participants in Breakthrough’s programs, a dignified way to purchase gifts for their loved ones at a fraction of normal costs, and be part of the joyful Christmas gift-giving process.

The store will re-price your gifts at a fraction of retail and provide families in the Garfield Park community a dignified way to purchase gifts for their family members. With Thanksgiving late and the event early the collection will soon be upon us! Please bring an unwrapped gift Sunday December 8 ^th and place it under the Christmas tree in the narthex. Mike Potts is a serial entrepreneur and long-time member of Northfield Community Church, where he has played piano in the praise band for nearly 20 years. As the founder and CEO of Felix & Fingers, a national music entertainment company, where he oversees a network of over 400 musicians spanning from New England to Hawaii. Additionally, Mike owns a small manufacturing company called Presto Pianos, where he manufactures and distributes piano shells. Mike has a passion for building a team grounded in core values and a sustainable model, ensuring music performance can be a long-term career.

He has been married to his wife, Jes, for 10 years, and enjoys attending church every Sunday with his son, Elliott, who often brings along a shark puppet to the front seats). Mike lives in Crystal Lake, IL.

Hurricane Relief Opportunities

There are a variety of ways YOU can help

You can help . For almost a month, exhausted families across the Southeast have been living with the inconceivable damage left behind after Hurricanes Milton and Helene. People desperately need help. Thousands have seen their neighborhoods destroyed. Many have lost their homes, their belongings, their jobs and sadly, in some cases, loved ones. NCC will be collecting items and assembling Church World Service emergency buckets and emergency hygiene kits.

If you would like to help in the venture:

1) Sign up to bring items for hygiene kits on the sheets passed around at church today or using this link https://evite.me/qQ6enTEaYj . Items that can be used are specific so please only bring what is asked for by Sunday, Nov. 10.

2) CWS Emergency Buckets items are better to buy in bulk, so NCC will purchase these items. If you would like to donate to the cost of items, please use the donation boxes next to the orange buckets in the garden room and narthex, or donate through the NCC’s website, labeling your donation CWS kits. The Board of Missions is financing items for several buckets, but we can add more.

3) Assemble kits – Everyone, all ages, are invited to help assemble emergency buckets and hygiene kits on Saturday, Nov. 16, 10-11:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall.

Our Music Director, Tim, will present his final doctoral recital on Sunday, October 20, at 3:30pm in Galvin Recital Hall at Northwestern University. This event represents the culmination of his years of graduate study and is an important milestone in the completion of his degree. The program will feature a mix of contemporary and traditional pieces, centered on recontextualizing and questioning the history of Americana music—one of Tim’s key areas of interest. The repertoire will explore this theme by creatively manipulating and reworking well-known hymns and patriotic songs. It will be an outstanding afternoon of music, and you’ll also see some of our talented staff singers in the choir in addition to a roster of fantastic students and professionals. Dental Access Days - 2024

Dental Access Days 2024

On April 26th Dental Access Days provided 31 homeless women with $30,997 worth of free dental work at Sarah’s Circle’s facility in Uptown! Services included cleanings, restorations, and extractions. 5 dentists, 1 hygienist, 4 dental assistants, 6 staffers, and 4 movers-set-up-dismantlers made it possible. Sarah’s Circle was a great organization to partner with. They were timely, helpful, well organized and followed through on all their commitments. Our new dental chairs performed well as did our new instrument supply and sterilization strategy. All in all, we're counting the event as a big win for all concerned.

Then, on June 9th Dental Access Days completed another free clinic with the help of 20 volunteers. They set up in the basement of Saint Gall Church on Chicago’s south side. Father Matt Foley invited people in his surrounding community who were struggling to gain access to dental care. 20 volunteers delivered $47,000+ care to 60 patients. Thank you NCC and grant from the Saint Peter Legacy in Mission Fund helped make all this possible.

On June 8, the team will leave for to western Kentucky where they will be working with residents impacted by the devastating tornadoes that struck Mayfield and the surrounding areas. Join us for an interactive conversation on how we as Christians can engage across difference with Amber Hacker, a senior leader from Interfaith America, a Chicago based national nonprofit dedicated to bridge-building and cooperation.

Amber Hacker is the Chief of External Affairs & Chief Financial Officer at Interfaith America, the leading interfaith organization in the US. Amber has been featured in Women’s Day magazine for her personal finance work, and has written about religion in the workplace for Harvard Business Review. Amber is the co-host of Money, Meet Meaning, a podcast exploring the relevance of the world’s religious traditions on our life with money. Amber is the daughter-in-law of Dan & Renee Hacker, members of NCC.

Annual Spring Meeting Thursday, April 25 ^th

Dinner in the fellowship hall is at 6:30pm.

The meeting portion of the evening will begin between 7pm and 7:15pm.

In addition to election of officers, board and committee members, we’ll hear a few words from the pastors and moderators. There will also be an update on the new solar installation slated to begin in mid-May.

Those who are up for election or re-election are encouraged to attend the meeting. All members of the congregation will find this meeting to be an informative and fellowship building experience.

Spring Cleanup

NCC Spring Cleanup on Saturday, April 6th from 9am - noon

Can you spare an hour or so on Saturday, April 6 ^th or, perhaps, at another day and time you might be available? We have a long, but very manageable, to-do list for those of all physical abilities (and preferences). If you enjoy being outside, weather permitting, we have outdoor tasks as well as indoor ones.

If you like washing windows (and, really, who does?), or at least are willing to spend an hour doing this chore, or tidying up the kitchen and pantry, doing reconnaissance looking for cobwebs, wiping down tables and chairs, cleaning up around the building and grounds, spreading mulch…..and more, then you are in just the right church!

Please let Pastor Meyer, Mike Chance or a member of the Board of Trustees know you would like to help, or just show up on April 6 (9am-12 noon) . Please consider bringing your own outdoor tools or, if you’re washing windows, window cleaning equipment and any other cleaning materials you prefer to use.

Celebrate the resurrection of our Lord!

In this season of Lent, we are frequently looking forward to the joy and celebration of Easter. Musically at NCC, we are looking ahead to Easter in a practical sense so that we can be prepared to provide meaningful music for the service! We are very excited about the collaboration we have lined up for our 10:30am service on Easter Sunday. We will be welcoming a brass quartet from Northwestern University, and Debbi Katz Knowles will be playing timpani. We also will be joined by an additional quartet of staff singers supplementing our choir. It’s sure to be a morning of celebratory and boisterous music-making! We look forward to sharing it with you.

As Easter approaches and we celebrate the joy of Christ's resurrection, the Mission Board has designated two excellent mission partners for the annual Easter Offering: Nova Ukraine and Immigrant Community Services (RICS) of the Heartland Alliance .

Supporting Relief Efforts in Ukraine

For the past two years, the Easter offering has aided Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war. The situation in Ukraine remains dire. Essential infrastructure like power, water, and healthcare facilities are also severely damaged. Addressing the Needs of Immigrants and Asylum Seekers in Chicago

Heartland Alliance's RICS has served refugees and immigrants for over a century. Recently, Chicago received an influx of asylum seekers (over 32,000) bussed up from Texas, many arriving in the dead of winter. Regardless of political views, these individuals face immense challenges as they await processing of their cases. Asylum seekers cannot work legally, increasing their dependence on the community they find themselves in and their reliance on organizations like RICS to provide food and shelter, healthcare, legal aid, and English language classes. RICS is currently overwhelmed by these new asylum seekers being added on to the caseload they assisted. In the spirit of Christian compassion, we believe in supporting those in need.

Dr. Mockaitis was our featured Lenten speaker last year and spoke to a large Zoom gathering on the topic of Russia and Ukraine. This year he has graciously accepted NCC’s invitation to talk about what is happening in Gaza and, in particular, provide some background and greater clarity around the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. In addition to his position on the faculty at DePaul, Dr. Mockaitis is regularly featured on WGN on matters of international policy and conflict. He not only insight and intellect, but also a Christian perspective to his presentations.

NCC is offering two opportunities to learn "What is Communion?" This is a time for all ages to explore this amazing sacrament.

At each session you'll have a chance to explore together what we celebrate during worship the first Sunday of each month. Dig into scripture, history, and present-day practices of Communion. There will be discussion and activities which will help you understand the meaning and importance of this significant rite of the church.

Choose either Sunday, October 29th at 11:30am (with lunch) or Saturday November 4th at 9:30 am (with breakfast). Reservations are not required.

This month's Messy Mission takes place at Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville. Everyone (age 5 and up) is invited to help pack lifesaving meals at Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville. You can help make it possible for nutritious meals to be sent to children around the world. NCC has 20 spots available . Contact Ronda Bower in the church office to reserve your spot .

Approximately 45% of deaths among children under 5 years old around the world are linked to undernutrition. Undernutrition means a person is not getting enough nutrients to grow and thrive. You can do something to help.

Children and teens, age 3 and up, are invited to join in the craziness and fun of Summer Sunday School at Northfield Community Church. Each Sunday there are two times to join in Summer Sunday School:

· during the 9:30 worship, children are dismissed about 9:45 a.m. and return to worship about 10:10

· during the 10:30 worship, children are dismissed for Sunday school after the Children’s Time, about 10:45 and Sunday school ends at 11:30.

The theme for Sunday school this summer is “Stump Miss Ronda” and Sunday school lessons were written on the ideas given by NCC’s children and teens, connecting them to stories and passages from

Family Promise Returns to NCC

Family Promise Returns to NCC!

Family Promise is coming back to NCC!!

July 9-16 and

July 30 - August 6

NCC will return to hosting families from Family Promise, a non-profit organization that helps families with children in homeless situations return quickly to permanent housing. While these families prepare for housing, they are housed in a variety of churches and synagogues in the Northshore area. These families come to NCC for dinner, overnight accommodations and breakfast, then go to jobs, schools and other activities.

NCC will be hosting families for the two weeks: July 9-16 and July 30 - August 6. We need your help to make this a positive and comfortable experience for these families. Please consider volunteering or donating for the following:

Volunteers

· Dinner host, greet families when they arrive and provide assistance with dinner and evening activities.

· Dinner provider - bring dinner, order for delivery, donate restaurant gift card for delivery order

· Overnight host - arrive at church by 8:00 pm and spend the night in the church and assist guests with breakfast and departure in the morning.

Donations

· Food and other supplies will be listed for sign-up on Sunday, a sign-up genius is also being created

· Gift cards for grocery stores to purchase supplies needed

On Sunday, June 25th we welcome an ensemble from the Campanella Children’s Choir to the worship service. Campanella is on a mission to erase borders between the diverse backgrounds within the community, promote tolerance, acceptance, and mutual understanding. Singing together and listening to each other help choristers learn how individual efforts can contribute to the group's success. Holy Week at NCC: April 2nd - April 9th

- Palm Sunday April 2nd Palms will be available at both the 9:30 am and 10:30 am service. At the 10:30 service the congregation will assemble in the narthex from where worship begins with the traditional gospel reading and choir. This will be followed by the congregational procession with palms.

A Just Harvest’s mission is to fight poverty and hunger in the Rogers Park and greater Chicago community by providing nutritious meals daily while cultivating community and economic development and organizing across racial, cultural and socioeconomic lines in order to create a more just society.

Since 1983, A Just Harvest has provided a nutritious meal to anyone in need , no questions asked , in partnership with more than 35 religious congregations and community organizations. Together we ensure that, on any given night, as many as two hundred people from around the metropolitan area get enough to eat.

Eden Theological Seminary - Special Projects Fund

Eden, a closely related seminary of the United Church of Christ, prepares clergy for ministry in the local church and in church-related institutions. NCC's directed gift each year supports the work of Prof. Christopher Grundy who teaches liturgy and homiletics. www.eden.edu

EdPowerment – Kilimahewa School Project

EdPowerment, now an international organization, began with volunteers teaching English and other basic subjects for short periods of time at the newly formed Kilimahewa School District in Tanzania, Africa. In 2010, a small group of the U.S. teaching team formalized an effort to support the educational needs of the village on a larger scale. Knowing education does not exist in a vacuum, the group tackled a grassroots, hands-on program of economic and education support with the goal to elevate this community and move toward a productive future. One project made possible in part with NCC funds was the drilling of a first water well resulting in 500 people gaining access to safe, fresh water. More recently, funds raised are directed to the operation of the Kilimahewa Educational Center making possible certified teachers, supplies, and a newly started food program. Also, support is provided for advanced students to attend a private boarding school and special needs students receive private training with their families about disabilities.

Feed the Dream – Guatemala

This organization supports food programs delivered to the back-country villages of Guatemala, an area with the highest percentage of chronically malnourished children in Latin America. The program reduces preventable child deaths and implements selective health care and nutrition programs that give the children better hope for a positive future. This year Feed the Dream is transforming the village Xesajcap 2, a mountain village at 6600 elevation with 55 families and 89% malnutrition. One village mother summed up the impact of this program saying, “You are waking up our minds.”

Dental Access Days (Volunteer Dental Clinic)

Local area dentists volunteer time and free professional dental care for adults who do not have insurance or access to dental health services. The Foundation transports equipment to a temporary site for Friday/Saturday clinics. Funds donated pay for supplies, site expenses, lodging for visiting dentists, etc. When held, clinics provide the equivalent of $100,000 worth of dental services for 120 patients for approximately $8000. Volunteers from NCC organize and recruit the professionals and other groups needed to set-up and staff the clinics.

Midwest Palliative and Hospice CareCenter

Serving communities in north/northwest Chicago and the north Cook County suburbs plus Lake County, the CareCenter’s mission is to care for patients and families through exceptional and individualized palliative care, hospice and grief support services for family members as well as special grief support services for children. Each year, more than 3,000 individuals receive comprehensive medical care, and hundreds of others take advantage of support services through counseling, crisis intervention and workshops. The CareCenter’s vision is to achieve fully integrated palliative healthcare for people of all ages, cultural backgrounds and economic status through innovation, collaboration, education and advocacy.

The Ministry Fund

Pastor Meyer administers NCC’s assistance fund on a case-by-case basis, and needs often arise numerous times per week. Individuals and families benefit, some for only one time, but others may need help more often. Area residents or often individuals/families just passing through may come to NCC. Some of the ways help is provided are with $20 or $25 Jewel grocery or Shell gas gift cards; direct financial aid where a gift card wouldn’t suffice, even emergency lodging at a motel. The funds are exhausted, or nearly so, every year with the recent years having increased demand. Some years extra funds from members quietly replenish the program, or even special appeals to the congregation are needed. Good judgment and compassion prevails, but sometimes the response must be a gentle “No.” Providing phone numbers or referrals to other agencies are sometimes a good solution. Rarely must anyone be turned away hungry. Nearly always it’s possible for a lunch to be served, or a person may be taken to lunch or even provided with a bag of groceries.

The New Foundation Center in Northfield is dedicated to improving the quality and services for people with serious mental illness. Some of the core programs of the Foundation include: psychiatric rehabilitation, permanent supportive housing, supported employment and health and wellness; and the infrastructure needed to provide safe, sound, effective and efficient services. People with mental illness have high rates of co-morbid illness like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Following the guideline, “Getting Healthy – Staying Well”, the center provides nutritious food; access to the education and tools that can lead to well being, strategies for stress management; and opportunities to exercise, rest, enjoy fun activities and good friends – all adding up to a healthier life.

North Shore Senior Center - House of Welcome (HOW)

Persons with memory loss and their families can benefit from NSSC’s “HOW Adult Day Services”. Specialized programs for persons with memory loss from Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias include structured, therapeutic, small-group activities in a comfortable home-like setting. Participants with early, as well as more advanced memory loss, enjoy meaningful activities and friendships, while caregivers benefit from time on their own.
