Deacons 10:30 Sunday Morning Usher Duties

Prior To Service

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before the service.
  • Obtain bulletins, attendance card, and nametags for the greeters and ushers from the office. There are blank cards in the office front desk drawer or in the parlor.
  • Greet the other ushers, review procedures etc.
  • Make sure the flowers and chalice are in place. If there are no fresh flowers, look in the kitchen or the chapel for them..
  • Check to see if the coffee cart from the Garden Room has been brought to the Narthex.
  • Prepare the coffee (see separate directions) and roll cart to Narthex
  • Light the candles.
  • If necessary, adjust the windows, heating and ceiling fan according to the weather.
  • Make sure the sound system for the pulpit and lectern is activated.
  • Greet the worshipers. Pay special attention to those who may be new or who might have questions about the facilities, coat racks, wash rooms, childcare, Sunday School etc.

During The Service

  • Close main door when the service begins.
  • Greet latecomers in the parlor and give them bulletins before they are seated.
  • Complete the attendance card before the children leave the sanctuary.
  • Have an offertory prayer prepared if called for in the bulletin. Pre-written prayers are available in the back of the parlor (with collection plates).
  • Assemble with the other ushers a few minutes before the offering is to be collected.
  • Take the offering. Put all of the offering in one plate before walking to the front during the doxology to give the prayer.
  • Keep any prayer cards/visitor cards separate and give to the minister after the service.
  • Place the offering in bank bag (should be with the collection plates) and put it in the appropriate secure location.

After The Service

  • One usher should stand with the minister to direct guests/answer questions.
  • Extinguish the candles.
  • Pick up bulletins, papers, etc. left in the pews and return the hymnals to the pew rack.
  • Return the chalice to the closet in the sacristy.
  • Take the water glasses to the kitchen and put them in the dishwasher.
  • Take all of the bulletin materials and the attendance sheets to the office.
  • Check the flower list to see if the flowers are to be given away or arrange to have them taken to shut-ins or a nursing home.
  • Meet with one of the ministers to obtain the names of first time visitors. Help prepare welcome pack and arrange to have them delivered to the visitors within 24 hours, if at all possible. See separate instruction sheet for further details.
  • Be sure the sacristy closet door is locked before you leave..
  • Turn off the lights (switches are located in the panel to the right as you enter the sanctuary and at the pulpit) and turn the ceiling fan down to low speed.
  • Check to be sure that the greeters have properly cleaned up the coffee service, juice, etc.
